Lymph Node Ultrasound (USG)

Lymph Node Ultrasound (USG)

What is Lymph Node Ultrasound?

Lymph node ultrasound (USG) is a non-invasive, painless, and safe diagnostic method that uses high-frequency sound waves to visualize and assess the structure of lymph nodes in various body regions. It helps detect lymph node enlargement, shape, internal structure, and other indicators that may suggest inflammatory or oncological conditions.

How is Lymph Node Ultrasound Performed?

During the examination, the patient lies down or sits, depending on the area being examined. A gel is applied to the skin, and the doctor uses an ultrasound probe to scan the lymph nodes — most commonly in the neck, armpits, groin, or other regions. The images are analyzed in real time to assess the size, shape, and internal structure of the lymph nodes. The procedure usually takes 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the scope of the area examined and whether in-depth analysis is needed.

What Does Lymph Node Ultrasound Evaluate?

This examination allows for the evaluation of:

  • Lymph node size, shape, and borders

  • Internal structure and blood flow

  • Reactive or pathological lymph nodes

  • The possible cause of enlarged lymph nodes

What Can Lymph Node Ultrasound Help Diagnose?

It helps diagnose:

  • Inflammatory processes (e.g., viral or bacterial infections)

  • Enlarged lymph nodes of unknown origin

  • Oncological diseases (e.g., lymphomas, metastases)

  • Autoimmune diseases (e.g., rheumatoid arthritis)

  • Cysts, abscesses, or other structural changes

When is Lymph Node Ultrasound Recommended?

The examination is recommended if:

  • Enlarged lymph nodes are palpable

  • There is unexplained fever or inflammation

  • There is suspicion of tumors or metastases

  • Monitoring is needed for a chronic condition

  • There is pain, swelling, or other symptoms in a specific area

Contraindications

There are no specific contraindications for lymph node ultrasound. It is safe for all patients, including children, pregnant women, and individuals with chronic illnesses.

Preparation for Lymph Node Ultrasound

No special preparation is needed, but:

  • It is recommended to wear comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the area being examined

  • Bring previous test results and referral, if available

  • Inform the doctor about recent infections, inflammation, or ongoing treatment

Good to Know!

  • Lymph nodes are a crucial part of the immune system — they help fight infections and other illnesses

  • Enlarged lymph nodes do not always indicate a serious disease, but should be properly evaluated

  • Ultrasound is a quick and safe method to detect changes early and, if needed, proceed with additional tests or biopsy

The results are usually available immediately after the procedure. If additional analysis or comparison with previous data is needed, the doctor will inform you when the report will be ready.

Both National Health Service (NHS)-funded, insurance-covered, and paid services are available.
